2017 Matchup

The 2017 MEAC/SWAC Challenge will be played Sunday, Sept. 3 from Ace. W Mumford Stadium in Baton Rouge, La. The 13th annual event will match the MEAC's South Carolina State University with Southern University from the SWAC.

Coach Buddy Pugh's South Carolina State Bulldogs are coming off a 5-3 MEAC record in 2016, good enough for 3rd place in the conference. They are expected to be among the favorites in the MEAC this year and will be led by returning MEAC Defensive Player of the Year Darius Leonard.

The Southern Jaguars also have a positive outlook for 2017 after recording an 8-1 SWAC record in 2016. Coach Dawson Odums has won at least 6 SWAC games in each of the last four seasons. The Jaguars will be led by returning Second Team All-SWAC QB Austin Howard.

South Carolina State and Southern are both unbeaten in their MEAC/SWAC Challenge histories. South Carolina State has won in 2005, 2009, and 2015, while Southern came away victorious in 2007 and 2010.
